Hamilton tops sportsmen rich list

It was announced over the weekend that Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has topped the Sunday Times Rich List for sports stars.

The reigning World Champion has already won three out of four races this season to lead the Drivers’ Championship and now he has been named the UK’s richest sportsman for a second year in a row.

According to the Sunday Times’ Sport Rich List for 2015, the 30-year-old’s wealth has increased from £68m to £88m over the past year.

Hamilton is yet to sign a new Mercedes contract, which some have suggested could be worth more than £27m a year, so it is likely that his earnings will go up again next year.

He leads the way with England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney now second (£72m) while McLaren driver Jenson Button drops to third with an estimated value of £71m.

Hamilton and Button are the only two F1 drivers in the top 10 and the top three are followed by tennis player Andy Murray (£48m), QPR player Rio Ferdinand ($44m), Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard (£42m), NBA star Luol Deng (£40m), Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho ($40m) and Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard (£39m). Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and golfers Nick Faldo and Rory McIlroy round off the top 10 with £38m.
