Marciello to run in FP1 at the Spanish Grand Prix

It was announced today that Sauber test driver Raffaele Marciello will be back in action at the Barcelona circuit this weekend, driving the C34 in the first of Friday’s practices.

The Ferrari Academy driver has already taken part in one session, putting in the laps on the Friday of the Malaysian Grand Prix. This time around though, he’s in for an extremely busy weekend as on top of his F1 duties he will also contest the second round of the GP2 Series.

In his interview with the media today, Marciello is looking forward to the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend despite him being very busy over the course of the weekend. Marciello stated the following:-

‘Overall, it will be a busy weekend for me.Ferrari on Friday for FP1. I am really looking forward to it. I enjoy driving on this track, as it consists of fast as well as slow-speed corners.

‘It is important being consistent over a lap, because if you push too much in the first sector, which has some fast corners, the last sector with slow-speed corners could be challenging as the tyres could overheat. My favorite part of the track is the left-right-right combination, turns seven, eight and nine in sector two, which is quite fast. In general I like high-speed corners, and also turn three is nice to drive.’

Even though Marciello will a busy man during the course of the weekend, it is clear that he is ready to gain more mileage and experience with Sauber this weekend at a circuit that he likes overall and the challenge it presents him. From what he has stated today, he has a lot of experience at the circuit and knows just what it takes to get a good balance and set up around the circuit which will help him a lot.

Further on his interview today, Marciello despite his commitments will also be back in the C34 for Day Two of the post-grand prix test at the Barcelona circuit. Marciello added the following:-

‘After the race weekend, I will have the opportunity to drive the Sauber C34-Ferrari on the second day of in-season testing in Barcelona. I am looking forward to testing the car for one whole day during which I am able to collect some mileage.’

To receive this opportunity from Sauber highlights just how talented they feel Marciello really is. This will also give him another chance to gain further mileage and experience with the C34 and also the Sauber team which he will learn on and also give him motivation the next time he is able to run with the team.

Overall, the fact that Marciello has been handed two further opportunities so soon after his first in Malaysia, show just how much confidence the Sauber team have in his ability to perform on the track as a driver. And this weekend will be no change for Marciello which is to achieve the best performance this weekend with Sauber and in GP2 and show what he can do as a driver.

I look forward to seeing how Marciello performs this weekend and also in the post- Grand Prix test too.
