In an interview with the media yesterday, McLaren-Honda driver Jenson Button ended the team’s point drought by finishing in the points with an eighth place finish at the Monaco GP.
The renewal of the McLaren-Honda partnership got off to a stuttering start this year, but the MP4-30 has improved over the last few races. Button’s team mate Fernando Alonso predicted points for McLaren in Monte Carlo and that’s exactly what they did as Button, who started P10 following penalties for Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean, finished eighth.
Alonso also looked good for a top-10 finish, but he was forced to retire due to a mechanical problem.
In an interview with the media yesterday, Button believes that he had a great race and got the best out of the car as a result, but knows that there is a lot of hard work ahead in order to score more points again this season. Button stated the following:-
‘It’s a very good day. We’re not going to pat ourselves on the back too much after P8, but we got the maximum out of the car. The pace didn’t seem too bad compared to the cars in front, so I’m reasonably happy – it’s good to be so far up, and through outright pace too.
‘This is one of the better circuits for us; I don’t how we’ll be in Canada – low speed corners but long straights. We’ll have to make the car as slippery as possible if we want to score points again.’
As Button said himself yesterday, they achieved the best result that they could with the car yesterday and was happy with the pace of the car throughout the race too. Even though Button understands that the next race in Canada will be a different challenge to Monaco, he knows that there is still a lot of hard work ahead in order to score points again this season.
But overall, they should be pleased with what they achieved in Monaco last weekend and this result is showing that McLaren are taking steps in the right direction and this result should only build their confidence for the rest of the season ahead; they have shown that when everything comes together, they can do it and I didn’t have any doubts about that at all.
