In an interview with ESPN F1 over the weekend, Sauber Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn has said that the reason the team made their driver announcement for the 2016 early was to avoid “rumours” circulating in the paddock.
Sauber made an earlier than normal driver line-up announcement last month, confirming that both Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson have been signed on for another season.
The decision to announce early was made to avoid silly season rumours which usually spread toward the end of the year, as most teams wait until after the summer break to make public their driver plans.
In an interview with ESPN F1 over the weekend, Kaltenborn believes that the announcement brings not only consistency but also a chance to disclaim the rumours that was circulating around the team as well. Kaltenborn stated the following:-
‘It just brings in a certain consistency, and stability of course, and it just clams things down. There are so many rumours around and our drivers then get questions and they don’t know what to say and what is right and what is wrong.
‘It clarifies the situation, it’s transparent and now everyone knows and all those topics of speculation are over as far as we are concerned.’
I agree with what Kaltenborn has stated in her interview over the weekend and I have huge respect for what the Sauber team have done. If the Sauber team are happy with their drivers and both parties are happy to continue with the arrangement; then by announcing it as soon as possible not only shows how committed they are to each other but also puts an end to the rumours that circulate during the “silly season”.
In the words of Kaltenborn herself, the announcement has clarified the situation and everyone knows who will be driving for the Sauber team next season and they can focus on the task at hand which is getting back to competitive ways, racing on the track and focusing on the 2016 season as quickly as possible.
