It has been announced this afternoon that the FIA World Motor Sport Council has cleared Toro Rosso to use 2015 Ferrari engines next season.
After both Red Bull teams cut ties with Renault, Toro Rosso agreed an engine deal to run year-old power unites from Ferrari, whose engines it raced with between 2007-13.
However, the Faenza-based squad had to wait for clarification from the FIA to clear Ferrari to supply two different specifications of power unit in a single season.
The WMSC formally ratified the ruling today, therefore opening up the possibility for the deal to be officially confirmed. In an statement to the media today, the FIA stated the following on the matter at hand:-
“Power Units homologated in previous seasons may now be re-homologated. Previously no manufacturer could supply more than one specification of PU. The World Motor Sport Council was also advised that the FIA had agreed for Ferrari to supply a fourth customer team with a 2015-specification Power Unit in 2016.’
