Three days before Christmas, it was announced that the Sepang International Circuit will undergo maintenance in 2016 to ensure it remains a world-class track.

The Malaysian track will close between the February 15 and May 8 next year in order to be upgraded.

The track plays host to major international events such as the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix, Malaysian MotoGP and various testing sessions in both sports. It is also available to the public through private bookings.

In an interview with the media Sepang’s track’s chief executive Datuk Razland Razali stated the following about the works as follows:-

‘The last five years have seen an average 98 per ent usage of the track’s availability throughout the year, from large international events all the way to private bookings.

‘These events have taken the circuit to a whole new level of recognition and, in tandem with this, it is a must for SIC to continue providing the best experience and top levels of safety for all track users.’

This operation is in accordance with the requirements of the Automobile International Federation (FIA) and Federation of International Motorcycling (FIM). The project will ensure that the Sepang track continues to be homologated by the FIA and FIM as a Grade One and Grade A circuit.

Despite the rebuilding of the gravel bed area at the first turn, the actual layout of the track will not be changed.
